It got confirmed today: November 25th there will be a tribute concert to celebrate the music of Irish pianist and conductor Noel Kelahan, who passed away last February.
It’ll take place in the National Concert Hall in Dublin. I’m already looking forward!

Another Dublin trip ahead
News letter in the news paper
Last week I sent a news letter to all subscribers. I regularly send letters, mostly to inform people about concerts in their region (I wouldn’t want to bother people from the north of the country with small concerts in the south and vice versa). This time however I had some concerts on bigger festivals to announce and also other interesting things to tell.
It’s amazing how many nice reactions I received! But – even more to my surprise – I got to be mentioned in the weekly jazz column of Bert Jansma in The Hagues regional quality paper Den Haag Centraal. Bert quotes more than a bit of the newsletter.
For those who feel dissappointed not having received the letter: you can view it here (sorry, this one I only made in dutch). Interested in a subscription? Just click the button and let me know which concerts you would like to be informed on.
New project with pianist Jeremy Manasia
When I was visiting New York last January, I got to catch a concert of Jeremy Manasia. Such nice surprise! I first met him back in the time he was studying in The Hague about fifteen years ago. We all really looked up to him because of his nice playing. His concert in Smalls this year was flabbergasting, it really got to me. Later in the week we drank some coffees and talked about him coming to Holland for a little tour.
So here we are: May 2013 Jeremy’s coming to The Netherlands. First gigs are booked, more to come. Jeremy sent me some charts so we can make a little demo recording (without him, but with another amazing pianist: Bob Wijnen). I’m laying hands on a new composition and thinking of a nice arrangement of another. Plenty of work to be done!
But I don’t mind working hard, especially when you have a band as nice as this one. The line-up will be as following:
- Ellister van der Molen – trumpet and flugelhorn
- Ack van Rooyen – flugelhorn (on some of the gigs)
- Jeremy Manasia – piano
- Jos Machtel – bass
- Matthias DeWaele – drums
For those of you who read dutch: I wrote a little text about the project here.
Now back to work!
New triplicate band photos
Triplicate had a nice littlegroup activity last week: a photoshoot with Piet Gispen. We took loads of photos, but this one represents us the most, we think. In the meanwhile a lot of work is being done on the new Triplicate website. It’ll be in the air soon with news, pictures, videos and a contest.
More radio
Next Thursday April 5th I’ll be featured for a whole hour in Jan Keur’s “spotlight on” program at Radio Capelle. I’ll be talking about and playing music of my compositions, my inspiration (Clifford!) my bands Triplicate and Alice in Dixieland. Broadcast will start at 10.00PM till midnight.
Post Scriptum: Last Saturday, April 14th Jan passed away. I wish all the best to all who cared for him. He’ll be missed!
Mailing list
Recently I have been trying out a new mailing list provider. This one allowes me to make different groups, which is great because I don’t want to bother people with concerts that are 300 km away. I formed 16 different regions and people can choose now of which concert they would like to be informed.
The following button leads to the subscription form. Of coarse you can change your information or unscubscribe at any time. Have a look and try it out!

On the radio
At this very moment I’m listening back the radio broadcast radio maker Casper van Eick sent me of his program ‘Jazz op de Dijk’. He plays tracks of dutch jazz musicians including Sanna van Vliet, Yuri Honing and Triplicate
Last week I could be heard on radio station “radio6″ with the “E.J. de Graaff Group”. The stream can be found on http://player.omroep.nl/?serid=5939. Scrolling to 02:37:40 will lead you to “just one of those things”.
Next Tuesday another Triplicate track will be on the air at Arrow FM hosted by Rolf Delfos and Bart Wirtz. Tune in at 22.00 I would say!
March 11th I’ll be back at “Jazz in the Morning”, Radio6. They’ll be playing one or more tracks from the Triplicate cd, and I believe even some music from the latest cd of the all female band “Alice in Dixieland”, in which I have been taking part since 1998.
Update: the broadcast of “Jazz in the Morning” can be heard through http://player.omroep.nl/?aflid=13952582.
Triplicate video
In October we played in Heemstede with Triplicate. Pianoplayer Bob just found the following video online. Did we enjoy that afternoon! A wonderful audience (it’s some sort of a private jazz club) and a very warm welcome with tea and cookies.
Loosdrecht x 2
Leticia, here on marimba
Some people just get all the fun… like me! I have the joy of announcing that I’ll be performing in Loosdrecht twice coming months, first occasion being Februari 2nd with ‘Leticia y su Rumbadama‘. The repertoire of this all-female salsa band spans from traditional Cuban Son to a diversity of Salsa and Caribean styles such as Cha Cha Cha, Guaracha, Son Montuno, Rumba, Plena, Bomba and the very danceable Merengue. It’s music made for dancing, but it can be just as much enjoyed sitting back and listening.
- Asdrid Diaz – vocals
- Ellister van der Molen – trumpet
- Mick Paauwe – babybass/backing vocals
- Lilian Jarad – piano
- Leticia Bal – conga/footpedals/backing vocals
Then March 22nd I’m lucky again: I play there with Triplicate plus Eric Ineke: the successful line-up as on our cd ‘Three and One’ (iTunes / CDbaby).
Both concerts start at 8.30PM. For more information about the jazzclub, visit loosdrechtjazz.nl
Review time
I didn’t really get to making end-of-the-year-lists last year, but if I would have, certainly the tour with Rein de Graaff trio plus Sam Most would have had a promintent place. Fortunately the concerts didn’t go unnoticed. In the weblog Draaiomjeoren Eddy Determeyer wrote the following (you can click here for the whole article):
Als tweede blazer had De Graaff trompettiste Ellister van der Molen uitgenodigd. Een goede keuze: deze dame behoort inmiddels tot de top en bewees dat met een fraai en logisch opgebouwde solo gelijk in het eerste nummer, ‘Take The A-Train’. Als collega Valaida Snow nog had geleefd, zou ik de respectieve middenriffen van de dames wel eens aan een vergelijkend warenonderzoek hebben willen onderwerpen.
(As second hornplayer De Graaff had invited trumpet player Ellister van der Molen. A good choice: this lady nowadays ranks among the top and proved so with a nice and logically built up solo directly in the first song ‘Take the A-Train’. Had colleague Valaida Snow still been alive, I would have liked to compare the two ladies’ abdominal muscles.)
Another nice review was written by Hans Koert in his Keep (it) Swinging weblog. He writes about Chris Peeters‘ cd ‘My name is Chris’, one of the cd’s that I have had the pleasure of contributing to. The whole story, plus nice pictures and a little youtube video of Chris can be found here.
