New triplicate band photos

Triplicate had a nice littlegroup activity last week: a photoshoot with Piet Gispen. We took loads of photos, but this one represents us the most, we think. In the meanwhile a lot of work is being done on the new Triplicate website. It’ll be in the air soon with news, pictures, videos and a contest.

On the radio

At this very moment I’m listening back the radio broadcast radio maker Casper van Eick sent me of his program ‘Jazz op de Dijk’. He plays tracks of dutch jazz musicians including Sanna van Vliet, Yuri Honing and Triplicate

Last week I could be heard on radio station “radio6″ with the “E.J. de Graaff Group”. The stream can be found on http://player.omroep.nl/?serid=5939. Scrolling to 02:37:40 will lead you to “just one of those things”.

Next Tuesday another Triplicate track will be on the air at Arrow FM hosted by Rolf Delfos and Bart Wirtz. Tune in at 22.00 I would say!

March 11th I’ll be back at “Jazz in the Morning”, Radio6. They’ll be playing one or more tracks from the Triplicate cd, and I believe even some music from the latest cd of the all female band “Alice in Dixieland”, in which I have been taking part since 1998.

In October we played in Heemstede with Triplicate. Pianoplayer Bob just found the following video online. Did we enjoy that afternoon! A wonderful audience (it’s some sort of a private jazz club) and a very warm welcome with tea and cookies.

Leticia, here on marimba

Some people just get all the fun… like me! I have the joy of announcing that I’ll be performing in Loosdrecht twice coming months, first occasion being Februari 2nd with ‘Leticia y su Rumbadama‘. The repertoire of this all-female salsa band spans from traditional Cuban Son to a diversity of Salsa and Caribean styles such as Cha Cha Cha, Guaracha, Son Montuno, Rumba, Plena, Bomba and the very danceable Merengue. It’s music made for dancing, but it can be just as much enjoyed sitting back and listening.

A nice review by Rakendra Smit, in the dutch magazine Muziekwereld

Op deze cd horen we drie jonge jazzcats Ellister van der Molen (trompet en flugelhorn), Bob Wijnen (piano) en Johnny Daly (contrabas) samen met oudgediende drummer Eric Ineke. Dit gezelschap zoekt geen nieuwe wegen en volgt geen trends. Ze spelen standards en een aantal mooie composities van trompettiste Ellister van der Molen. Het is traditionele jazz uitgevoerd met vakmanschap en enthousiasme. Virtuositeit wordt gekoppeld aan subtiliteit waarbij alles in dienst staat van het groepsgeluid. Alles vol gevoel en doordacht. Opvallend in het geluid van dit kwartet is het gebruik van de flugelhorn, het zachte klank-karakter van dit instrument wordt door Ellister van der Molen op imponerende wijze ingezet bij unisono spel met de piano in snelle abstracte bopthema’s.

Met deze debuut-cd levert Triplicate, zoals ze het zelf zeggen, een rijke hommage af aan het grote verhaal van de jazz en wat jazz nog steeds kan zijn.

Ellister van der Molen’s trumpet makes you forget the trumpet. You just hear music, good music with a lot of heart. Notes, weightless and yet confident, dancing on Eric Ineke’s brushes or sticks, creating melodies and intelligent variations on the spot.
As if blowing a trumpet with a warm sound, going through every chord change imaginable and swinging hard are no big deal at all. She’s a poet on her horn and reminds one of other lyrical trumpeters; Chet Baker and Kenny Wheeler in particular.

(Up in jazz heaven, Chet will be proud to hear someone continuing his tradition of lyricism with a rhythm section he would have hired immediately, and a band as a whole who knows how to handle Gnid, one of his favourite Dameron-tunes. Wheeler, who is still very much with us, is honoured with his own ‘Everybody’s song but my own’.)

There is also a touch of swing trumpet in her playing. While visiting her website, I wasn’t surprised noticing she collaborates also with Dixieland veteran Dim Kesber.

In any style, Ellister is herself – a wonderful musician who, hopefully, will continue recording as a leader after this impressive debut.

“Three and One” is a very pleasant surprise by three young musicians and an “old hand”. Trumpeter Ellister van der Molen, pianist Bob Wijnen and bassist Johnny Daly had been gigging as a trio, when they sought support of master drummer, conservatory teacher and motivator Eric Ineke as inspiration for their début cd.
Triplicate plus one is a quartet that isn’t about trends but is, instead, driven by pure musicianship and a deep love for jazz music. This deep love is one that connects tradition with a freshness that is rooted in the present.
