Triplicate at Jazzahead

Triplicate LogoComing weekend pianist Bob Wijnen and me shall be promoting Triplicate at Jazzahead! in Bremen. As we’re always on the outlook for new playing possibilities, this is the ideal spot to meet new people and expand our playing field.

In case you will be there yourself: in between the conferences etc. we’ll be at the Dutch Performing Arts stand (B11) on Friday between 5 and 6pm, Saturday between 12 and 1pm, and at the Sunday jazz brunch with plenty of promotional material.

See you there!

The music of Gerry Mulligan / Art Farmer Quartet

From 1952 on Gerry Mulligan has been experimenting with pianoless quartets. He believed omitting the piano would make the band to sound tighter. The best known recordings of this setup are those with Chet Baker, but Mulligan did the same trick with several West Coast musicians such as Lee Konitz, Bob Brookmeyer and Paul Desmond.

Trumpetplayer Art Farmer joined the band in 1959. The cooperation didn’t last for very long, since both players had other projects keeping them from the quartet (Mulligan founded the “Concert Jazz Band in the spring of ’60 and Farmer started the Jazztet together with tenorist Benny Golson). Fortunately they left some evidence in the form of several live recordings and a superb studio recording “What is there to say”.

Together with baritone sax player Tini Thomsen, bassist Jos Machtel and drummer Niek de Bruijn (he just won the Erasmus Jazz Award) I’ll be paying a tribute to this band. So far we have two dates planned: May 2nd at the Regentenkamer and May 12th in Schiedam.

Triplicate Album Release Party “Call of the Wild”

November 28 7:30pm – ISS, The Hague

Triplicate’s got a very good reason to celebrate! A new group sound and repertoire consisting of more originals led us to the new album “Call of the Wild”, which will be released on November 28. This album is only for sale online, or on a unique Triplicate usb-stick which you can buy directly from us.

Of course a party like this isn’t complete without a nice concert, and the International Institute for Social Studies (ISS) is willing to support us with their facilities. Doors open at 7:30pm, and the entrance fee is €10, in which a festive welcome drink and a Triplicate surprise pack are included.

We hope to see you all on this beautiful night! – ISS – Kortenaerkade 12 – The Hague – Entrance fee: €10,-

Oosterpoort Groningen

Announcement Rein de Graaff OosterpoortI came across this announcement and I couldn’t help feeling very proud.

I have been visiting jazz concerts since I was very young. My father used to take me to Theater Pepijn in The Hague, De Tobbe in Voorburg and Thelonious in Rotterdam to see the jazz greats of that time. There were some people that we would go to see more often than others. Like Jarmo Hoogendijk or Ferdinand Povel.

And the Rein de Graaff trio. For 25 years Rein has been organizing tours, performing with internationally renown artists. I have seen many impressive concerts throughout the years, starting from a very early age.

Now you understand why it is that I feel so proud playing with Rein. Last year we did a short tour with flutist Sam Most, and now we get to play together again! Rein is celebrating his 70th birthday and his 25 year lustrum as an organizer. Other participants will be Houston Person(!), Sylvia Droste, Benjamin Herman, Ben van Gelder, Martijn van Iterson, Marius Beets and Eric Ineke. The week after we play at the Bimhuis.

Another Dublin trip ahead

It got confirmed today: November 25th there will be a tribute concert to celebrate the music of Irish pianist and conductor Noel Kelahan, who passed away last February.
It’ll take place in the National Concert Hall in Dublin. I’m already looking forward!

More radio

Radio CapelleNext Thursday April 5th I’ll be featured for a whole hour in Jan Keur’s “spotlight on” program at Radio Capelle. I’ll be talking about and playing music of my compositions, my inspiration (Clifford!) my bands Triplicate and Alice in Dixieland. Broadcast will start at 10.00PM till midnight.

Post Scriptum: Last Saturday, April 14th Jan passed away. I wish all the best to all who cared for him. He’ll be missed!

On the radio

At this very moment I’m listening back the radio broadcast radio maker Casper van Eick sent me of his program ‘Jazz op de Dijk’. He plays tracks of dutch jazz musicians including Sanna van Vliet, Yuri Honing and Triplicate :)

Radio 6 logoLast week I could be heard on radio station “radio6″ with the “E.J. de Graaff Group”.  The stream can be found on http://player.omroep.nl/?serid=5939. Scrolling to 02:37:40 will lead you to “just one of those things”.

Next Tuesday another Triplicate track will be on the air at Arrow FM hosted by Rolf Delfos and Bart Wirtz. Tune in at 22.00 I would say!

March 11th I’ll be back at “Jazz in the Morning”, Radio6. They’ll be playing one or more tracks from the Triplicate cd, and I believe even some music from the latest cd of the all female band “Alice in Dixieland”, in which I have been taking part since 1998.

Update: the broadcast of “Jazz in the Morning” can be heard through http://player.omroep.nl/?aflid=13952582.

Loosdrecht x 2

Titia bal

Leticia, here on marimba

Some people just get all the fun… like me! I have the joy of announcing that I’ll be performing in Loosdrecht twice coming months, first occasion being Februari 2nd with ‘Leticia y su Rumbadama. The repertoire of this all-female salsa band spans from traditional Cuban Son to a diversity of Salsa and Caribean styles such as Cha Cha Cha, Guaracha, Son Montuno, Rumba, Plena, Bomba and the very danceable Merengue. It’s music made for dancing, but it can be just as much enjoyed sitting back and listening.

  • Asdrid Diaz – vocals
  • Ellister van der Molen – trumpet
  • Mick Paauwe – babybass/backing vocals
  • Lilian Jarad – piano
  • Leticia Bal – conga/footpedals/backing vocals

Three and OneThen March 22nd I’m lucky again: I play there with Triplicate plus Eric Ineke: the successful line-up  as on our cd ‘Three and One’ (iTunes / CDbaby).

Both concerts start at 8.30PM. For more information about the jazzclub, visit loosdrechtjazz.nl

Jazz workshop zonder Ellister
